Based on the Russian GAZ-51 truck developed towards the end of WWII, production started in 1946 and ran until 1975 at the Gorky automobile works. The GAZ-51 was popular due to it's reliability and rugged construction and many variants were produced. The AS-3 army ambulance was one variant which was based on the GAZ-51 chassis and built at the Pavlov Bus Plant.
