The Elephant, designated Sd Kfz 184, was designed with the Tiger (P) chassis as the basis. Mounting a 8.8cm KwK Pak43/2 L/71. The initial delivery of 90 vehicles known as the Ferdinand were ready by the end of May 1943 and were used in the summer offensive at Kursk. These initial vehicles had no secondary armament and were vulnerable to infantry attack. Following these lessons, the Elephant was developed with an added hull 7.92mm MG34.
