JGSDF Type 74 MBT

The Type 74 was developed by the JGSDF (Japanese Ground Self-Defence Force) and built by Mitsubishi Industries as a replacement for the earlier Type 61. Development started in 1962 when it was realised that the Type 61 was no match for the Soviert T-62M. Features such as the contolable suspension of the MBT-70 and rolled steel hull of the Leopard 1 were used in its design. The Type 74 was armed with the 105mm M68 gun. Production started in 1975 with 220 produced up to 1980.
