Introduced in 1940, the original T34/76 was armed with a 76mm gun. It was an excellent tank which took the Germans completely by surprise. With its effective gun, its sloping armour and wide tracks the T-34 was well suited to fighting in the terrible conditions of the Russian winter. As WWII progressed, the Russians increased the turret size of the T-34 allowing it to mount the more powerful 85mm gun making the T-34 more formidable against German armour.
