The AEC Armoured Car was based on the Matador chassis with 629 vehicles built between 1942 and 1943. Designed to provide firepower and protection comparable with a tank, the first AEC carried a Valentine Mk II turret with a 2 pounder gun. By the time of the Mk III the 2 pdr had been replaced with a 75mm. The Mk II and Mk III served in Europe often alongside Staghound armoured cars.
