The Hummel, designated Sd Kfz 165, was a Panzer IV conversion mounting the 15cm schwere Panzerfeldhaubitze 18/1, first produced in 1942. Hummels were issued to heavy field batteries of the armoured artillery detachments of several Panzer divisions early in 1943 and first saw action at Kursk. Initially the allocation was six Hummels in a single heavy battery although later some Panzer divisions received a second heavy battery.
